FS#695 - Can install on HP Stream laptop ( Drive formating issues)

Tried to post on the forums but there are always WORDS not allowed by the forum tool.

I installed ELive on an old Acer laptop without problems. LIke it

But I tried to install it on a more recent laptop, my mane work laptop when on the road, a small HP Stream with a 32 Gig SSD drive to see if that slow laptop would go faster than with Ubuntu

The installation is having problem with my drive. (Partitioning / erase it)
It says something like the USB STick is listed as the 1st device, to reboot so the BIOS can adjust.

BTW I need to boot in safe mode with the Elive Stick, else ELive can’t initialize the GUI

SO If I reboot, go back to the install, the instal STOP with an error, " no details in the window”.. At the formatting drive stage...

How could I help you help me ?

Would Elive be faster than LUbuntu ?

JF
For now I still keep Ubuntu 18.04 on my main HP i7, 16 gig, SSD drive Workstation, want to test it more on my Laptop 1st...

Unfortunately the forum receives many spam, so there's a big list of words blacklisted, can you paste here the message that you are trying to use that is not allowed?

Can you ignore the message about the "first partition detected as USB" in order to continue with the installation? or you are unable to install Elive?

SO If I reboot, go back to the install, the instal STOP with an error, " no details in the windowā€¯.. At the formatting drive stage...

Did you have installed Elive with the "reporting issues" enabled? If so, tell me which email you used so that I can check the logs to see what happened and fix the problem

Would Elive be faster than LUbuntu ?

Yes it should be pretty faster

OK I just tried again this morning so the date of the report June 12 2018, jfbourdeau@gmail.com

This time, I decided to choose the option that sounded like I wanted to DualBoot / share the computer with another OS.

After the window where it ask If I want to encrypt the disk ( I choosed no ), then there is a window saying it will format my disk ( should not as I choosed the option to share the PC with another OS ?).

So the Window warning my disk will be formattEd appear and after that, there is an error window with no message.

SO that I choose to format the computer or co-habit with another OS ( The OS was Debian BTW, as in my yesterday tests I deleted myself with gparted the partition to help ELive... Didn't work better so yesterday choosed to I install a Fresh copy Debian without any problem) the formating hard drive error message show up again

Hope the log will help you

If I boot Elive with the USB key without choosing the Safemode, it stop wqhen dealing with screen issues. lUbuntu or Debian are installing without any issues

This is the picture of what it says in DEBUG MODE

BTW It must be a nightmare to make a OS work with so many different Hardware combinaison on the market. If you can't help me install Elive on that Laptop, don't worry... I will continue to play from time to time in a VM to see if I am making the move to make it my main OS on my desktop

it's just that using it on the real day to day on the laptop, force me to go through the process faster ( adopt it or just find it cool).

I still posted your web site on LinkedIn, and sent your url tom some Linux friends and intend to make a little video about it on my French " BLog about technology" as the look / Feel of Elive is impressive.

Good, im seeing the report and im improving Elive to support your "rare" hard disk

This time, I decided to choose the option that sounded like I wanted to DualBoot / share the computer with another OS.

This sound strange if the installation wanted to use the entire disk / format it, I have rephrased the "automated partitioning" first option from the partitioner-selector, but im not sure that you are talking about this message (you said sometthing about share with other OS's?)

Can you tell me what exactly said about the "share with other os?" message?

I still posted your web site on LinkedIn, and sent your url tom some Linux friends and intend to make a little video about it on my French " BLog about technology" as the look / Feel of Elive is impressive.

Thank you, this will be very helpful for Elive :)

Please wait that I finish to implement the support of your special hard disk type and I answer back here :)

IN case it help :

To answer your question ( I just booted Elive in a VM from a ISO)

After your click the Elive installer (once you're in Elive, booted from a USB stick)

You are asked to choose
1- Special optimizations for automated partitioning
2- More than one operating system found
3- MIgration and upgrade modes

I was talking about option 2... I " assumed " this choice was to DUalBoot ELive with another OS...

But that I choose 1 or 2, it's after that thing get complicated with the Hard Disk.

JF
As Mentionnes, I need to choose the SAFE MODE (I am ok with that, as long as the final result is " it's working from HD / GUI get initialized)

Perfect! installer ready,

let's first do a small test, start the Live mode and run this:

sudo partitions-list --show-all

the previous command should NOT show your MMCBLK hard disk, but after to update the packages using:

apui elive-tools eliveinstaller-5g

running again the previous command should then show your MMCBLK disk

now, the installer has been improved with many changes to support your type of disks, as you can see in http://paste.debian.net/1028910/

You can try now to run a new installation (with reports enabled)

Plese tell me any details that you see, so this will also helps everybody having the same type of disks :)

About the confusing message:

Ah! I see, these "options" that you said are not really options but only informational texts (preview information about the features of the installer), I see now that they can be confusing due to this

So im improving this interface to look something like this: http://main.elivecd.org/ss/e-5b1fe8e11a37a8.17710213.jpg

I have added a previous message saying "click to show info...", it does looks now more clear? I don't know how to make it more intuitive that is not an option, hum....

JF Bourdeau commented on 12.06.2018 15:50

You rock! Elive is now installing...

Question as you have more experience than me, as I am installing it on my production Laptop, I choosed YES as to ENCRYPT my Hard Drive (in case it is stolen / lost)...

From your experience, when a computer is not so fast, is it a mistake to choose to ENCRYPT ?

Will it create a significant load / overhead ? Or it won't slow down my already slow laptop, that much ?

Ok now going back to the installation... TKS YOU SO MUCH !

Yes good move....

From your experience, when a computer is not so fast, is it a mistake to choose to ENCRYPT ?

Elive is pretty well optimized to not slow-down when encryption, with optimal settings for different hardware (slower computers = faster encription, faster computers = stronger encryption)

Will it create a significant load / overhead ? Or it won't slow down my already slow laptop, that much ?

You can try different installs if you want, but i don't think that you will see any difference :)

We're almost there LOL HP STREAM 11-D010 CA

booted up properly but touchpad not working. WHat do you suggest ?

As for the GUI effect when we move, closed windows, by default, they do not seem to have been activated.. How do I activate ? Were they not activated because the installer think the hardware is not good for it ?

it works on live mode? try the touchpad configurator included by elive

What is not activated exactly about the gui "move/close windows"? i don't understand :)

JF Bourdeau commented on 12.06.2018 16:51

- it works on live mode? try the touchpad configurator included by elive
No
And if I try to use the touchpad configurator, it says I have no Touchpad

-What is not activated exactly about the gui "move/close windows"? i don't -
- understand :)
I mean those Sci Fi effect when we move windows, close them, etc

Just received that error :
"These special features require 3D-accelerated drivers. You use a standard compatibility driver instead which makes your graphical inserface work, but which is not sufficient for the intended purpose."

Admin
Thanatermesis commented on 12.06.2018 17:24

Ok then sounds like the drivers are too old to detect your touchpad, you need to wait after the release of 3.0, the good news is that an external mouse works much better :), i personally recommend you the model "genius nx-7000" which is cheap and im much more satisfied with it than any logitech mouse that i had

I mean those Sci Fi effect when we move windows, close them, etc

compiz / ecomoprh / special effects, yeah... probably old driver for this computer

Just received that error: ....

Exactly, I have btw updated the message to something more clear:

These special features require 3D accelerated drivers. You are using a standard driver which is more compatible and can make your graphical interface to work correctly, but it is not sufficient for enable the special effects. This can happen with very old computers or very recent ones, in the second case you can wait for a newer version of Elive that will have newer drivers.

JF Bourdeau commented on 12.06.2018 17:28

ok tks LOL JF
TO reassure you, I am not removing it from my HP Stream, but looking forward 3.0 :-)

Admin
Thanatermesis commented on 12.06.2018 17:33

haha thank you :-), let's see if i can release this 3.0 asap!

JF Bourdeau commented on 12.06.2018 17:33

Just connected my Laptop to my home TV, HDMI
The 2 screen configuration tools do not recognize the SAMSUNG TV connected to the HDMI port

I will wait for 3.0 from here as I will bother you too much with all those things that may be only affect my brand and model of laptop.

JF

Admin
Thanatermesis commented on 12.06.2018 17:36

booting the computer with the screen connected by default can help, maybe in Live mode too, then the screens configurator should work maybe

JF Bourdeau commented on 12.06.2018 19:37

one last thing, Suspend, Hibernation on the laptop do not work well.
For now now removing Elive from the laptop as I need this " presentation Laptop" to open rapidly.

But 3.0 is out, I will do more test to se if closing the lid, suspend, hybernation and so on works well

JF
installing Debian Cinnamon to continue getting familiar with Debian ( I come from the Ubuntu world...)

Admin
Thanatermesis commented on 12.06.2018 21:29

Ok

Just note that 3.0 will be the same as the last beta, newer drivers will come for the next beta's after 3.0
