Elive

When installing Elive Revolution rl2 on hard drive (SATA drive), I asked the installer to place GRUB in the root partition (I wanted to keep the NT bootloader). However, my MBR was deleted and booting was impossible (actually I don’t know where GRUB was installed, if it was). I had to launch the installer again and ask to put GRUB on the MBR to recover a working system. So this is not a critical problem, but it can be stressing !

Be patient with these installs:

Wine + WinMed.player (ie6),localization of Firefox,loacalization of Thunderbird,VLC,maybe Xine or others..

These will overwrite default settings for plugins to firefox and is not very easy to get them back to be driven by MP Embeded plugin.Can’t be deleted or rerouted.

Not bug,just stupid made programs-they don’t ask,just do.

Instale la ultima version de elive estable 6.0 (23/dic/2006), detecto mi tarjeta pcmcia wifi, pero cuando reinicie mi laptop, no volvio a detectar la tarjeta extraible wireless. En la particion winxp trabaja de maravilla la tarjeta

I am noticing a complete slow down in computer operations when opening the interface properties menu for wifi configuration.
Using the clock applet as a gauge, the seconds get updated every 2 to 4 seconds (this time interval varies.) Mouse and text operations are only accessible in these intervals, as well.

Also, for example, once finished filling the properties and clicking OK, the little activation window that comes up with the little bar scanning back and forth (while the wifi signal is being captured) takes 15 seconds to go from one side to the other!!!
This slowdown has been noticed on all versions .5.1 through the rel2!

I have not been successful at wifi connection in ANY of versions .5.1 through rel2!

After the notification of the first activication notice, most of the time the computer returns to normal operation speed...but not always. Re-boot is then necessary to return to normal speed.

Also when updating to rel2, during the install it said I needed the bcm-43xx driver...and I have the ralink. I used synaptic to remove the bcm-43xx driver thinking there may be a conflict, but that did not help.

Terminal takes all the free power of CPU on multilanguage system+keyboard layout-easily solved: Remove indication of switched keyboard in xorf.conf by lightening Scroll or something else. CPU falls back to normal!!! (unbelievable,but works for me-Czech lang. install+keyb CZ+US)

Good opinion would be to install all programs through ALSA emulation to support SW mixing of sound for more than one voice/program grabbing sound.Who doesn’t have HW mixer supporting this,will have a nightmare (skype,XMMS,GAIM...)

2.6.7.15 kernel IBM T no hibernate (due too old kernel/no partition prepared after install (no notice)).Suspend works strange.Sometimes wakes up/sometimes hangs within suspending/waking.Hibernate tries to work but only beeps after insertin IBM_ACPI - should be inserted automaticaly when install recognized IBM ntb.LID switch only power off the lamp,not display.Power button doesn’t work-not recognized by acpi.No rules to run dimmer of LCD (battery/AC).. Some plugin/module would be fine..

i have a problem with shares-admin-manager, when i run this program for directory shared , the app freeze.

I have a couple old computers with Ati Rage 128 Pro 32MB cards. In both Revolution releases the detection of the video card dos not work properly and asks to choose fglrx, radeon or VESA drivers for X11, the first two failing, obviously, and the third one being terribbly slow.
The driver to use is r128, and changing that in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restarting the X system everything works perfectly.

There isn’t the driver for Linux Realtek RTL8111(B)/RTL8168(B)
(module r1000).

Chosing keyboard layout diferent from english switches direktly to it. And loging becomes inposible. I think there should be some hot key for swutching between english and other kayboard layout.

The driver for bcm43xx(broadcom 4318) is buggy(unusable), the best way is using ndiswrapper and windows*sic* drivers, contact me if you need something!

GTKPod is under found under utils → file manager. I think it makes more sense to put GTKPod in Audio as it’s used for audio. This is just a suggestion.

This is by far my favourite Linux distro Thanks.

The Bug
System hangs(with mouse pointer disappearing) on my IBM Thinkpad T22 (P3, 512mb ram) every time I use the internet. Problem occurs in both e16 and e17(more frequently here) versions of elive 0.4, 0.5 all and so far on Revolution livecd.

I don’t know if its elive, firefox or just a general problem with Debian and the Thinkpad.

Elive 0.53 unstable using fglrx driver option....fails and the screen rest black and any key or combination works.
Just after choosing between ati driver options.
With 0.51 unstable works well.
My pc: AMD 1000, ATI-9550 and Compaq 17” monitor.

gtkpod fails to start with the following error.

Icedove and Thunderbird are both installed by default on Elive 0.5.3. Thunderbird should be removed in favour of Icedove as this is the version that Debian is using. On a related note, maybe the Icedove icon should be replaced with one of the icons from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IceDoveIcon or one from gnome-look.org because I’m not sure if you can ship that icon without Thunderbird.

APM is not being loaded during bootup. Even if acpi is disabled and apm is modprobe’d after boot, upon shutdown, the screen of the laptop will only blur and the laptop will not turn off. If you are in live mode, the cd will eject, but the laptop will not turn off. One note to keep in mind is that you cannot modprobe apm in version 0.5.1 as the OS complains about missing libraries.

Boot from liveCD is impossible on laptop Dell E1505/6400 with SONY DVD RW DW-Q58A.

All any choice of boot menu fails with the following message :

I was very happy to see both qjackctl and zynaddsubfx as part of the default elive packages so I presumed it was also going to come with a real-time kernel as I heard that, as of 2.6.18, this has entered the mainline kernel code. Sadly this doesn’t seem to be the case.

This is the biggest missing feature in elive for me, and other wannabe Linux musicians too I’d think. If real-time support can’t be enabled it the primary elive kernel for whatever reason then it would be great if it came with a second, rt-enabled one too.

Would be good if the elive installer could detect what other OSs are installed and add them to the grub menu automatically. It didn’t find my OpenSUSE 10.1 install on hda1 anyway.

entangle and e17genmenu missing from default e17 menus. e noobs could well be put off by this, thinking they can’t edit the menus and the shortcut bar, at least not graphically. You have to know about entangle to use it to add itself to the e17 menus.

A shortcut to e17genmenu would be nice too.

Under elive 0.5.1 (is this the same as 0.5 dev?) the icon for usb disks doesn’t disappear when I right click and unmount one under Thunar. I upgraded to the latest Thunar yet this still occurs. Is this an upstream bug?
