FS#144 - A few Feature Sets to add to the next release would be nice....

I would like to request a couple of items be added to the installer for ease of use.

  • I use VPN to get into my home network, this would be a nice package to have installed already.
  • The package installer seems straight forward, but when you choose to install the extra apps, where do they go? Did they get installed or just downloaded? Maybe some literature included as a help link within the installer would be nice, or an interaction from the installer to place downloaded items into the programs menu, even under one category like recent installs or something.
  • E16 and E17 are very different in nature, but I would like to see some of the features combined. I like the raise up of the E16 on the bottom menu, but hate that it does not show battery consumption, Temperature and time. Is there a way to have the best of both worlds?

I can be the guinea pig for these changes if necessary. I think this is one of the better distros, so keep up the good work.

Reason for closing:  Not a bug

Hi James!
OK, first of all, this is a bug tracker, not a feature request site...
But to answer your questions:
1) Do a search with synaptic (the package manager) for VPN and install what you think you need.

2)The applications get installed, usually into /usr/bin you can access them with a terminal or by pressing alt+esc and start typing the name of your app. Then you should go to http://deepcode.atspace.org/make-eap.html and read up on how to make an e17 icon, and eap. Then you add your icon to the menu or start bar with Entangle, which you can find in Elpanel.
(Note: the eapps are gone from the next version of e17, Elive is using a slightly older version that is very stable...it is NOT fun to get segfaults all the time! But the new version has auto-generated menus)

3) E16 and E17 may look a bit alike, but they are two totally different beasts, and can not be merged. However, there is a module with the features you request for the new E17 (which we will start working with in the next development release of Elive)

Finally... Elive is a Linux distribution that uses enlightenment as desktop manager. It has got nothing to do with the actualy development of E16/E17. For those things, you should visit #e on freenode IRC.
