If Elive is installed, you need to tell BIOS to use the pci card... and you will need to run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
to make full use of your card. In my opinion, it may even be better to use Elive’s “upgrade function” (if you have a separate /home partition), start from the cd, and run the installer and it will see your previous installation and ask if you want to upgrade.
This will ensure that you are using the correct drivers. I think you can use the “Nvidia New” option in live cd mode, and it will install with that option.
I suspect that you installed with the on-board graphics chip?

Chris what i was trying to say is that i already tryed switching bios to my internal card but it doesnt work.I have to physicaly remove NVIDIA in order for livecd to work, and i already tryed installing Elive with my onboard chip and putting NVIDIA back after instalation and i get the same problem,Elive wont log in,all i get instead of Login screen is command prompt that says EliveUser:

               Password:

i put in password and it never gets out of command prompt and goes back to EliveUser:

                                                                         Password:

its definetly a bug that has something to do with NVIDIA,cause Elive works fine with my onboard only if i remove NVIDIA from my PCI slot, and when i put it back after instalation it doesnt.
I have searched google and alot of people have same problem instead of real Login screen all they get is command prompt.

My System:
Compaq Persario 5000 1GHz
384 RAM
Intel onboard video card
NVIDIA fuzion fx5500 pci 256mb

OK.
so is EliveUser your username? If not, type in your username there and then your pasword.
I apologize if I am stating the obvious here, i don’t mean to sound condescending at all!
Just trying to figure it out :)

No what im tryin to say is that i dont get the graphical desktop Login screen like im supposed to,all i get is black screen command prompt that says user: and password:.i tried typing in eliveuser and elive for password and nothing happens,it goes back to User: and Password:,if i remove NVIDIA everything is normal i get regular desktop Login screen and everything works fine,so the problem is with NVIDIA card itself. If you know a way i can take a screenshot tell me so i can post it.

No that’s fine. I understand now... sorry it took so long.
I have no idea... I will show Thana this thread, he may have some ideas.

I have tried to install a few other linux distos and had the same problem with 2 of them-my video card, they were gOS and OpenSuse they worked only with onboard video, differnce is,is with Elive i have to physicaly remove my card, but with gOS and OpenSuse all i have to do is switch cards in my bios setup,i just thought it might help, thanx.

Hello

I suffered that with a coupl of PCI graphic cards, nvidia and ATI.

Log in with your username and password, go as root and type: startx

It worked for me and even with a nvidia RIVA TNT 2 card 32mb it worked with 3D support on live cd, it assigned nvidia-legacy drivers adn the nvidia-legacy-kernel 2.18... and the effects were amazingly fast ona pentium 2 at 233mhz with 192 of RAM.

The bad thing is that I cannot make it work yet with the hard drive install that I already performed, if not it would be a dream come true for me!

I will let you know how it ends up. it’s a really old machine this of my dad’s friend who had previously windows 2000 running at 1 mile per century.

Thanks for a great OS that will make happy old rigs and them owners!

This happens with a recent development version ?

Hello,

No, it happens with Elive Gem 1.0

It was surprisingly cool for me so I decided to give it a hard drive install.

But when I rebooted after the install no 3D acceleration effects were turned on, so I went to synaptic and added the legacy kernel but without the nvidia drivers, rebooted and it returned a terminal srcreen and kernel panic, so I tried with some basic commands and eding wot a fresh reiserfs istall, evertything came out right again, but I had to come to work... I left the PC doing the hardware recgontion that starts right after a fresh install.

But I would love to know hich drivers should I add for this effects going on again...e.g.: when i minimized a window it flipped away to the right up corner, and had animated previews in the 4 desktop squares that were placed in the down left corner this time, also had better open-minimize-close response. It was cool.

If you confirm me this bug is fixed in a recent development version i close this bug because then, the bug is fixed

OK I will try it with a new development version, as elive 1.0 was stable I thought somebody could hlp me, but I understan you have been working on bugs in the RC versions, so I will give them a try.

Thanks.

Just a last question... do you think the newer versions (kernel and stuff) would work this fast in such an old machine (pentium II 233mhz - 192 RAM - Nvidia Riva TNT2 32mb).

Admin

Gem looks like more fast, but better to try it yourself, i don’t have this machine to know this

Thank you and greetings from Costa Rica!

See you later! (sorry for buggin in the bugs page hehe)

I tried today the 1.9.21 and I have and old nvidia card. Entraced launch itself but after putting the login and password of any user (the old ones, new ones, root) it just put the entrance screen again. I have probed with the default card, the nvidia old and the gpl nv drivers. Tomorrow I will probe with the nvidia very old to see how it behaves.

Cheers,

Admin

Does this bug still exist on a recent Elive version ?
