FS#322 - Laptop cannot boot up normally when on battery (Acer Aspire ONE)

With ELive 1.9.20 and on my Acer Aspire One I cannot boot up into X when on battery.

The boot is taking EXTREMELY long time and when it finally does something I get a console login.
Upon login it complains that all FS are readonly and hence fails to create the proper locks for X to startup.

Since we can’t upload files - here’s the output from dmesg from a battery boot:

is it still present in the latest 1.9.20?

Juzz commented on 26.12.2008 12:17

HAve they released a new version without popping the version number?

Juzz commented on 26.12.2008 18:38

It’s still there in the normal 1.9.21

I’ll give it a whirl in the 1.9.21-5-compiz

Juzz commented on 26.12.2008 21:28

It also does this in the compiz version :(

did u ever try with Debian?
any idea if it works in debian?
it sounds like a debian testing problem to me, in this case is needed to report a bug

Juzz commented on 29.12.2008 11:49

I have not tried with debian.

I can boot up when on battery power in elive 1.9.19 - however then I will miss the great updates that has happened in the later versions...

Admin

btw next time use a pastebin website (set it to save the paste at least a month)

Admin

which kernel uses 1.9.19 ? show me the result of cat /proc/version, also give me a pastebin of the file /boot/config-$(uname -r), but use this one http://www.rafb.net/paste/ better, instead of pastebin

Admin

Which is the device where you have installed Elive ? in which hard disk ? internal or external USB ?

Also, give me result of hdparm -t /dev/your-hard-disk-where-elive-is-installed, on both AC / BATTERY modes

Juzz commented on 05.01.2009 19:15

See the output from 1.9.19 here:
http://rafb.net/p/r8gik339.html

Juzz commented on 04.02.2009 14:49

This bug is still present in elive 1.9.22.

I could install on battery just fine, but normal boot is apparantly not possible while on battery power.

I have even gotten a bigger battery to test if it could be something with the amount of power left, but it didn’t help.

Admin

Maybe the cause is the Mhz of the CPU that will have modified, I suppose that this bug happens on live mode too right ? on this case, boot in live mode, with the battery mode, and see the first colored lines where say’s about CPU, show us this line (about the Mhz more exactly)

Juzz commented on 05.02.2009 13:55

No no - read my post - it doesn’t happen in Live mode.

That’s what’s strange!

Admin

It happens at all the times ?

Can you know in which exactly moment it turns slow ? (before to load grub, in the around 70 % of the progress of the boot after grub... etc)

Admin

Ok let’s try something :)

To see if this problem is fixed with a different kernel, unnafortunately there’s not a *very* new one, but at least a newest one yes, see *apt-get update && apt-cache search linux image elive 2.6.27*, you will have some packages for that version of kernel, an elive kernel, try to install it (and needed modules if you need/want), and edit your */boot/grub/menu.lst* file of grub to made a new entry for this kernel

Then, just see if the problem happens too with this kernel

Admin

It is the SSD disks model ?

it happens to me too, with the panasonic CF73, the laptop has a weak battery, but it is impossible to boot while on battery power, i get a bunch of error regarding a read only fs, and then it hangs forever while trying to start klogd.

Admin

I need to figure out where is the problem, assasukasse can you try please with other kernels ? i think that the cause could be a simple option of kernel, maybe a special option that Elive kernel’s has than the default debian kernel, so please install a normal debian from the repositories and see if boots (2.6.26 version too, like the elive one), so then i can found the exact option that mades it to not work

oki, i will install tonite and make u know!

seems that the problem is in laptop mode, disabling the NOATIME option and elive normal kernel loads in battery mode.
Seems is a not continuous bug.
i will keep testing

too easy, the problem is more complex..from time to time it still doesn’t boot.
totally disabling laptop mode seems to fix it.
is it possible to make laptop mode starts only after bootup is completed?

Admin

It is strange but looks like it doesnt start at the init scripts (?)

Try to see if you read the message Enabling laptop mode during bootup (press Esc to exit from bootsplash), so then see WHAT is the previous message and WHAT is the next one (to trace and know where it boots from)

You should have it running after to boot if you have the file /var/run/laptop-mode-tools/enabled

We should require more tests to know the cause of the problem ?

well i dunno, it could be caused by insufficient battery power, so the disk can’t be mounted correctly.
i noticed that it usually fails if doesn’t do fsck (on battery mode)
i will keep investigating

the problem is still here:
i wish i could find a way to force a fsck at bootup even using battery power.
It seems an old battery related problem, the FS is mounted RO and several files are giving error..
the loading stops at “starting klogd”

Admin

So what about using other kernels then ?

Admin

If the problem is since some part of the boot process and NOT from the first moment of the system boots (so, loaded grub and kernel, starting init scripts), do this for trace in which script exactly it turns slow:

Edit the file /etc/init.d/rc, the line 206 (for script in...), add a new (next) line that contains sleep 5 ; echo “### $script ###”

This should do a verbose (show the name of the init script running) at your next boot and that waits 5 seconds everytime before to run the next one

I experience the same problem on a Thinkpad X40. Looking around I investigated a checkroot.sh script and found that it does some strange check if it’s on battery. I would guess it’s either checkroot.sh or umountroot that is the problem.

I just need something that works; I am going to install Lenny straight up and put Enlightenment on top of it, or fvwm-crystal. Enjoy the donation, maybe I’ll check back in a few years.

Admin

Bad that im unable to reproduce the bug... May be the cause a forced shutdown ? Can somebody (**jhecker**?) try to add the line **set -x** in the first parts of the file **/etc/init.d/checkroot.sh** that looks like to do a special thing when on-battery mode (like not check root filesystem), this line is for a better trace so know WHAT it does and where it can fail

thana i added the set -x, during bootup it echoes alot of commands. at the moment i can't reproduce again the bug, i will wait till tomorrow so giving time the battery to die again.. i can give you ssh access, i will be online tomorrow morning from 10am till 6pm, the laptop is the one i use for working, so you can have access while i am at work BUT i can't forward ports and you CAN'T reboot the pc.. if you want to do rebooting tests, please do on friday night or saturday-sun that i dun work.

Hi, I have this problem on a Thinkpad X40 with elive 2.6.26.8-elive-686 kernel. I have read the thread and will follow the suggestions there and hope to post back in the next day or two with details. I have time to look into this in the coming daysso hopefully we can get the necessary information together.

Ah, seem to have posted twice somehow. Anyway... I have been trying a few things here and passing: acpi=off to the kernel at boot-time allows the system to start under battery power. I don't really know enough to interpret what this means but it may help narrow down what the problem is and will allow those of us having the problem to at least remain productive in the meantime. Regards

I do not mean to sound mean-spirited, but can someone explain why playing with power management will get one around the ro filesystem mounting problem? <Sigh> OK, I will reinstall Elive and see what I can find out.

I already tried acpi=off and didn't help..i dunno what else to try. I also tried using debian vanilla kernel, same problem.. no more ideas

Admin

Debian repositories in elive updated, please upgrade your system and see if the bug still here then we can look at the problem

After the modification you made on my system the boot problem didn't show anymore. seems the "problem" is the fsck on battery mode..once u let it run on battery mode, it did boot fine.

Admin

for now we will wait a bit more so that be sure that the problem is really fixed, and not a random chance

yes, i agree, yesterday i had 5 boots with no problem, this morning booted no problem again..i hope is not random.

i am totally sure now that the problem is fixed

Admin

Install manually the package initscripts from http://europe.repository.elive-systems.com/pool/main/s/sysvinit/ , check if you see the message "Battery level: ..." just after "Running on battery power, so skipping filesystem check" This fix should work for all the on-battery-mode that are higher than 20 % of battery (less, should do the same problem)

Just tried Than's solution on Thinkpad X40 and have booted twice so far on battery power, seems to be OK. Will run it a few times over the coming days and se how it goes. Regards...

working over here too but on another laptop (a samsung) i can't reinstall on my panasonic (its the pc i use for working). reinstalling manually the package works.

Admin

Perfect so i close the bug :) if there's a new case please reopen it again with the needed information
