launched from where/what ?, can you verify that this problem still here on a updated/recent version of elive ?

I can confirm this. I have installed elive-1.9.43_unstable on my Acer Aspire One 110L. If I am logged in as a normal user, if I try to do anything requiring Esu (change date/time, Synaptic, update system, etc.), Esu informs me that my root password is incorrect, even though it is correct, nor will Esu accept the normal-user password for authorisation (as in Ubuntu-derivative distros.) I have tried using sudo in a terminal with similar non-acceptance of either password. I must be logged into the root account in order for the password to be accepted and changes made (which I don't wish to do when it comes to Synaptic, apt-get or anything else that requires me to have a live net connection...)

Try to see if your root password works with the "su" command, in installed mode, so open a terminal and type "su" to see if works, if works, please tell me your root password to see if there's a problem with maybe special characters or something like that.

Thank you. I have done as you suggested, trying the root password first, and was returned "authentication failure". I tried this three times, carefully typing. Then I tried with the normal-user password (just in case) and again authentication failure. My root password contains only - and ' as special characters, the rest is lowercase and capital letters. Does that help?

Ok, this bug is fixed in the update of the installer, you can reinstall your Elive system with the next ISO or just updating your installer, for that, run a terminal in live mode and type "su" to enter in root mode, then type "apt-get update && apt-get install eliveinstaller-4g". Or you can enter with chroot to your installed system and run passwd to change hte passwords
