FS#452 - Fine tune freezes (sometimes produces a kernel oops)

When installing on a HP Pavilion dv6000, sl-modem-daemon (and sl-modem-modules-KERNEL) gets installed, and they mess up the fine tune process.

Sometimes it just freezes and goes no further but sometimes it produces a kernel oops.

I’ve removed the sl-modem-daemon and modules since I have no use for it (and I cannot turn off the modem in the bios of the laptop).
And now the fine tune just completed.

(a newcomer might not realize what to do to make it work and then give up on the installation)

Aparently the problem still on 1.9.39 thanks to the report of roxville, this is strange, let's do a few tests then...

In live mode:

  • Do you have the file (device) /dev/slamr0 ?
  • do you have the file /etc/rc2.d/S07afterlocales
  • Do you have a question in the boot of the live mode saying something about smart modem (slamr) that is going to be removed if you dont need it ?
  • do you have sl-modem-daemon and sl-modem-modules-2.6.26.8-elive-686 in the file /tmp/.packages-to-remove ?

The thing is that if is found the file /dev/slamr0 at the boot process, it asks about if you want to remove this module that bugs, but if is not found, it is removed automatically (listed on the file /tmp/.packages-to-remove so that when the system is installing, will be removed)

In live mode in 1.9.39:

  • Do you have the file (device) /dev/slamr0 ? NO
  • do you have the file /etc/rc2.d/S07afterlocales YES
  • Do you have a question in the boot of the live mode saying something about smart modem (slamr) that is going to be removed if you dont need it ? Not sure, what you mean by this, but no such question has popped up
  • do you have sl-modem-daemon and sl-modem-modules-2.6.26.8-elive-686 in the file /tmp/.packages-to-remove ? YES

Thanks for your answer, Im sorry for the delay, I don't remember to have received the notification of this answer...

Ok the thing is, these packages are listed to be removed when Elive are installing on the hard disk... and in the installed system it freezes when doing the fine-tune step right ?, this is strange... let's try some other tests:

  • When installed & before fine-tune step:
    • run dpkg -l | grep sl-modem and show me the result
    • run cd /lib/modules && buscar slamr, it shows any "slamr.ko" file found ?

Forget the last test, I have it

Ok, I have made a remote install to the Thybo's computer and now with the version 4.5-43 of eliveinstaller-4g package this problem should be really fixed and removed! please anybody that will confirm it so that ill close the bug ? Thybo maybe after its reboot+finetune ?

PS: How PITA is to try to fix a bug when you don't have the hardware or can't reproduce it... sigh
