FS#691 - Booted from usb tographical problems - after install I can't boot with that option -> black screnn

Dear Team,

great work, thank you.
But unfortunately I cannot boot after installation.
Or to be more specific… I can boot and all ttys take my requests…except of course tty7.
Or the main one booting… That one is black/blank…but i can kind of use my mouse as a curser.
This is exactly the same behavior I have when booting the live-stick with the default values.
But it works with the option “graphical problems”.
So imho I need the same boot option offered on the live-stick as “graphical problems”
for my main grub.
What parameters do I need to put in there… Or how can I fix this?
I will not use it as a live-system cause its just too damn inconvenient.
So please tell me how to get enlightenment to boot?
Otherwise I’ll have to back to ubuntu:(

Thank you and have a great day :-)

Thanks Michael for reporting this problem, specially before the release of 3.0 :)

But unfortunately I cannot boot after installation.

I assume that we are talking about the last beta versions (not the old stable)

But it works with the option “graphical problems”. So imho I need the same boot option offered on the live-stick as “graphical problems”

Perfect, sounds like we can solve this bug easily (and for everybody) :)

This is the list of extra used boot parameters for that option:

modprobe.blacklist=nouveau
modprobe.blacklist=radeonhd
modprobe.blacklist=radeon
modprobe.blacklist=vmwgfx
vga=normal
i915.modeset=0

There's other ones for the failsafe options too, if the previous ones doesn't works for you tell me and we will check for the other ones

So for test them, you need to:

  1. boot the computer, when the "BOOT GRUB" blue menu screen appears press the key "e" to edit the entries
  2. go to the "linux" line with the cursors, in the end of the line (after "quiet splash") add one of these parameters to test
  3. press F10 to test a boot with this parameter

When you have catched the remaining parameter that is not added please tell me about it so I can fix it in the installer to be included for everybody :)

Question: which graphic card you are using? "lspci | grep VGA" can tell you it

Note: if not works, try the same thing removing the "quiet splash" ones (better to first test with them included)

Thank you and have a beautiful day

Hey,

thanks for the quick reply.
I just tried all of these, since I found them on the stick.
Unfortunately it still boots to blank. I guess the problem is uefi.
I can only fully boot elive with legacy boot enabled and then only from the stick.
The problem is that with legacy enabled and the stick out of the machine, it says no operating system found.
Since I also have Windows and Ubuntu installed and both with uefi... I cannot just switch to legacy without loosing grub.
The only thing I can think of is to set it to legacy and reinstall grub there again... But this whole thing is already taking far too long now... Unfortunately I don't have time to try this until it works :-(
And I also don't want to break my existing OSes.

I understand that uefi quite unfortunately isn't supported at the moment. The only thing thats weird about all of this is that it does boot and let's me access the ttys... And when I press ctrl + alt + del it shows me that it reboots, so it's not frozen or anything...
So something is working...just not completely somehow.

Also when I try to startx it fails with: fatal server error no screens found... And with enlightenment_start l: Enlightenment cannot initialize ecore_x...

But I'll probably have to leave it for now.
Isn't there any way to boot elive from uefi?
And full uefi support won't be available soon, right?
Maybe I'll just have to wait.

Anyway, thank you very much and have a great day :)

Unfortunately it still boots to blank. I guess the problem is uefi.

Hum, it is a possibility but i dont think (live mode doesn't includes uefi too), in any case you can try to disable it and also "secure boot" from the bios to make sure

I can only fully boot elive with legacy boot enabled and then only from the stick.

you mean the "old computers" kernel? in such case you have a pretty old computer? what is its specs? (ram/cpu)

The problem is that with legacy enabled and the stick out of the machine, it says no operating system found.

Hum... I think that I understand now your problem, so yeah basically you need to switch to "legacy" in your bios to be able to boot Elive, but I think that you should not have problems booting windows and ubuntu with this option (im not sure about that so yeah, you can break your boot! warning with that)

And I also don't want to break my existing OSes.

I would personally try something: Plug another extra USB stick in your computer (a blank one, formated with a linux filesystem for example) before to install Elive, when it is going to install the MBR it should prompt you about where to install it (because the installer found then multiple disks), then say to install it in that USB, so in other words, if you reboot with that USB plugged (and select to boot from it) and the legacy mode enabled, it will trigger the boot of Elive, including a menu with the other OSes (windows and ubuntu), then try if all the systems boots correctly, if they does, then your computer can boot with Legacy mode including the other OSes (next will be to install again Elive but including the MBR to the real disk instead of that extra USB)

Now I just have a question... how you managed to install Elive previously if it didn't wrote the MBR on the HD?

The only thing thats weird about all of this is that it does boot and let's me access the ttys...

Ok wait! the system is booting correctly then, the only issue is with your graphical system which is not launching correctly, that's another problem... which graphic card you have exactly?

ecore_x ? hum... interesting, try with this option (from user):

export ECORE_NO_VSYNC=1 ; startx

Note: just try the "ecore" thing i have said in the end of the previous comment :)

Can you help me providing the info from these commands in the installed system? (just copy-paste the results)

sudo su
lspci | grep VGA
lsmod | grep -iE "(nouveau|nvidia|radeon|hd|fglrx)"
grep -i cmdline /etc/default/grub
cat /proc/cmdline

Thanks
