FS#730 - Elive 3.0.4 Session ends without prevention.

Hello,

I upgraded my system to 3.0.4 and after that, while I’m working, very often, session end and GUI restart into log screen (usually I logged in automatically, because I’m the only user of my computer).

It’s a critical problem to me because I lost almost all work in LibreOffice even if I try to save my documents very often.

Even while I was writing this bug report my system crashed again. I’ll try to reinstall 3.0.4 or even returns to 3.0.3 version.

Hoping this bug will be solved.

Thanks for reporting the issue,

I have updated a package that could have caused this issue, try to access to a terminal (desktop terminal for example) and run the command "apug" to upgrade all the system

Tell me if after the last upgrade you still having the desktop returning to the "login screen"

Is there a specific thing that happens in the desktop to reproduce the problem for me ?

Thanks for your quick answer. First I thought that Opera browser was involved because all times system crashed Opera was open, but last time it wasn't, so I think Opera finally it's not involved.

I reinstalled 3.0.4 and after that I run two times apug, first one some files has been purged, and second one everything was clean.

I'll continue to work and write again if crash happens, if it doesn't happen in one week I'll write here also to say that everything it's OK.

Anyway thanks again for your quick reaction, and for this nice project.

The package that I have updated is elive-desktop-wrapper, a reboot is needed after to update it (or just re-login in the desktop)

Like i said, I recently added a change which should *not* affect on this sense, but just in case I have revert this change to build the updated version 3.0.5, in order to make sure that everything is working correctly

Don't worry, I reboot my system after doing first APUG. I'll keep you informed next days if everything it's OK, and if not, as soon as crash happens again (I hope the bug it's solved with your mods).

Unfortunately, the mod doesn't work, system has crashed now two times, first one only with one Thunar window open, and second one only with Firefox as I was writing this message. :-(

Maybe I should downgrade to 3.0.3? With a big number of unexpected crashes I can't work safely with my documents.

No, this issue should be fixed upstream which can also affect everybody else, downgrading will probably not fix it too

We need to found the cause of the problem and make it correctly work, give me a few minutes so I can do some tests here with an installation of 3.0.4 and I will tell you something

If that can help you, I installed Elive in safe mode - old computer, any other way of installation done me a black screen at start (system started well but screek it's completely black, if I start in a console mode as root and I write startx all works fine).

It's a 2012 HP Mini notebook with an Intel Atom 1,6 Ghz and 1 GB RAM inside, and it crashed again two times while I was writing you this message. I have updated Monday 29th April and it crash first time yesterday 1st May in the afternoon, From monday to Wednesday afternoon it works very fine and stable. Today it has crashed almost 20 times.

That sounds very bad for the recently announced release, but unfortunately this what happens when too much internal things changes, I will need to hurry fix this issue and then upload a new version 3.0.5 with these fixes

About the black screen in live mode, i opened a different issue for that, check its details :)

I think that I found something that could cause these issues of desktop crashing, now im updating my laptop to see if happens, in the meantime you can upgrade again your system with "apug" to have these new updates

Yes it's not good the crashes but it's strange from Monday to Wednesday it's worked fine all three days and first crash appeared Wednesday at 18.00 in the afternoon. And today it's all day that it crashes continuously. it's so that it's strange....

It's because too many things changed recently :), and in such cases, "new surprises"

But maybe I have something that has broken in my hardware, because I try to reboot my system in Live mode (for issue and nor 3.0.4 nor 3.0.3 USB sticks works!!!! and they worked Monday, and I doesn't change anything in my BIOS...

I saw somewhere in Elive or in your website (I don't remember) some test to "stress" hardware. If I find them I'll run them, because maybe you're working for anything (a HW problem of my computer).

We will skip the test of hard disk since issues can be reproduced in Live mode

Note: 3.0.4 has issues booting on some computers, maybe is your case, check this: https://forum.elivelinux.org/t/module-dm-raid45-not-found-in-module-dep-error-when-installation/1009/16

For check the RAM, just run the "memory diagnostic tool" from the Live boot menu (advanced options menu), until it reaches a full PASS, showing no errors

For check CPU, I don't think right now that will be the case since these problems happens when the machine is stressed (high workload / temperature)

After a new apug my system still crash... :-(

When this happens, try to run the command "dmesg" and check if you see any useful "error" information in the last lines, this could tell you what is happening too

dmesg results seems to be Chinese for me, anyway some lines attired my attention because they signal some errors (I copy all lines, sorry):

I leave it for today, and tomorrow I'll try to resuscitate an old Acer to work and to test better the HP.

We'll continue our discussion tomorrow.

Thanks again, I write on an old ACER where I install Elive tonight without problems (its support graphical acceleration that HP doesn't and WHHHAAAAOOOOO!!!!! my desktop is nicer than in HP with the effects!!!!!)

I'm trying to save my HP documents partition into an external HDD (nunca se sabe y mas vale prevenir) this morning, and the HP crashes continuously so I'm sure it's some HW that's broken.

I'm actually downloading new 3.0.5 release (sorry for my little donation but as you know I'm unemployed actually and looking for a new job, in a new country, but I ever donate because I agree to Elive continuity and I find you have a very nice work that I like support).

If you want, as soon as my documents are saved (4-5 hours from now) I can give you a remote access to my HP if you want to make test yourself to help Elive developpement. With 3.0.4 release (actually installed) or new 3.0.5 ones (if I can install it, yesterday system doesn't allow me to boot from an USB flash memory). My idea is to delete HDD completely and test 3.0.5 with a single new reiserfs partition. If it works I'll made a new installation in the future with two partitions (+swap) for / and for my documents to work again with it because HP has a French keyboard and ACER has Spanish one, so it's easier for me to work in french with a french keyboard (AZERY vs QWERTY).

I can follow your instructions because now I works from my "new" old ACER and I have the faulty HP beside it.

I came with some news. As I try to save my documents in an external HDD, I realize that almost every time that touch pad moves GUI restart. Usually I used a Logitech M175 wireless mouse and not the touch pad, but while typing the touch pad sometimes detect my hands. Maybe a factor?

Anyway, as the copy has finished (and as soon as I moved my finger on touch pad it logged out again), I'll try to do a "clean" installation of Elive 3.0.5 in the HP erasing completely the HDD and giving Elive the work to organize itself my HDD.

As I say in issue #730 I make a NEW and clean installation of Elive 3.0.5 release from my USB flash memory. I leave Elive partition system to remove all my old partitions and it's makes only one formatted in reiserfs.

Graphical acceleration and effects are disabled because my HW seems not support OpenGL.

I'm working since half an hour without bugs. I tested both my Logitech M175 wireles mouse and touch pad, and both seems to work fine.

I think that things you'd changed in release 3.0.5 seems to works OK. Maybe my HDD had something corrupt (it's for so I preferred to remove my partitions, who came from several years ago, and made with other Linux distributions).

I propose leave this issue open still some days / weeks to see if bug appears again or not, but I think it's solved.

For the hardware problems, have you tested the RAM memory diagnostic tool ? (you can run this from the live mode, in the first boot menu, options), later we can check the cpu, I don't need remote access for now :)

For backups I suggest you to try the Unison tool included in Elive, which syncrhonizes data between disks, computers, networks, etc... in bidirectional mode seeking for updated ones, maybe is not easy to setup in a first time but is extremely handy and fast to use, I cannot live without it :)

Touchpad moving in HP makes the desktop crash ? hum... curious, never saw that before :) heh

For the HDD, check the disks tool included in elive, should report you "reallocated sectors" if has errors, in the SMART data of the disk, mmh but Elive should report you also if these errors has been found, automatically, on the desktop, so well, as said before, leave the computer running all the night the RAM test to see if found errors

Thanks for the info about Unison because I didn't know that tool, I'll take a look, because I have a lot of files that I should clean, purge and delete (Fslint helps me a lot, but I have a lot of old documents in different HDD that it would be nice to synchronize. I'll try it, thanks.

Effectively, with a clean install (from zero, not an update) in ALL HDD (removing my old partition schema) of 3.0.5 release my system hasn't crash. I think bug it's solved. Now we should know if it was a really bug, or a corrupted HW problem.

I'll perform this night the memory test from USB flash drive and tomorrow I say you the result. After that I'll follow your instructions to check other HW items.

As I saw you in issue #731 thread, if you agree we can change this thread (#730) in a private mode so I can explain you in Spanish all the problems I had installing Elive (3.0.3 release) in this machine (the HP ones) because I have had a lot... may those can help you to understand the possible bugs and it will be easier to me to explain and perform the test you maybe need in Spanish than in English.

As soon as you have your conclusions and results you can open this thread public again and tell the results public for everybody in English.

Anyway I'll continue to work with the HP and use the emergency laptop (the Acer) only if HP crashes or if you need to perform test in the HP.

Tonight I'll let the memory test running while I go to sleep to look for errors.

Well, since 3.0.3 is old and a lot of things changed, we don't need to worry about these bugs if they doesn't appears in the new versions :)

I've performed yesterday the SMART HDD test and there was 66 sectors reallocated in the past in my HDD. It also got 100º Centigrades some times (in red in smart tool) in the past.

Memory test it's running from yesterday night (more than 16 hours and still running), at this moment there are no errors detected, I'll wait until it will be finish.

If not, systems seems to runs well with 3.0.5 release, only it get screen frozen while starting one time yesterday (the screen with Elive logo and small dots moving below) and I need to force to halt it with power switch. Otherwise I think it has no more importance and while I was working with it everything it's OK.

I'll kept you informed in the next days.

About the HD, hum... there's an interesting thing, because Elive should -have- already tell you that there's issues in your disk, this is a feature implemented that should report you this information and tell you how to solve it (if i remember correctly), so we will try to improve this

At the same time, a disk with reallocated sectors means that it contains "bad blocks", and this caused historically issues not easy to deal with, the best is to fill the entire disk with zeroes in order to wipe all these ones and / or find new ones, then format the disk again which should skip these badblocks, if you use reiserfs it includes also a special feature to ignore these badblocks (this is made from the installer automatically with a feature to deal with the badblocks, the installer didn't tell you about them too?), what im not sure is if with a normal formatting, these badblocks are already skipped, I need to research a bit about this

The ideal is to replace the disk, which will guarantee no problems, and the good option will be being able to use the disk with these badblocks skipped, we need to research a bit on this to include these improvements as aparently are not well reported

So, first test to do, paste me here the result of this command (assuming that sda is your disk with elive / errors):

sudo smartctl -s -on -A /dev/sda

Question: the installed system or the installer never tell you about bad blocks found?

Note: having the HD to reach 100º C is something strange and very bad (high temperature is bad for them) and could have been the cause of these errors (phisical errors on the disk), I don't know how your HD is set up but if you can make it being more "cooled" can improve it too

First of all, the temperature of my HD isn't really 100° C (but Fahrenheit degrees) it's a mistake by me, the item is in red color at smart test and says that temperature failed in the past, but when the test were running was 38°C (100°F), I read the data thinking in a min/max range and without realize that were °C / °F. Sorry. Anywhere, in the past has fault, but I doesn’t know which temperature has been reached. This morning while starting it's a 15°C / 59°F

For reallocated sectors Saturday were 66 and this morning when I read again the SMART data they are 75 so I agree to write zeroes and format again, as my HDD it's actually almost "virgin" and my documents are saved in an external HDD, but you should tell me how to do that because I doesn't know.

Anyway Elive doesn’t inform me of HDD faults nor in the installation process nor in a daily use. I started with a, ext4 file system 15 days ago and I have reiserfs since 3.0.5 release.

My HDD is an ATA WD with 320 Gb size, it's a WD3200BPVT-60JJ5T0 I never opened this PC but to make one idea of it's quality it was the cheapest notebook I found in 2012 as I arrived in France because I only looks for a notebook with AZERTY keyboard to learn my brain to work with this keyboard in place of my loved QWERTY ;-) It hasn't the best HW inside.

Elive has partitioned itself as this: 8 MB non allocated at the start of the disk, then sda1 of 1,27 GB of swap (I have 1 GB of RAM) and sda2 of 296,82 GB in reiserfs for /

About zeroing, I will tell you how but let's wait a bit since is a dangerous procedure: most of the times it works but can make your disk completely usable (not recognized anymore), this is because the errors are more discovered and then unable to be used, this is not really a bad thing since we think that the disk is already broken and its safer it just "finishes to break" instead of having that accident in the future :), so let's wait a bit we finish the other tests before the big zeroing

but the result is: sudo: smartctl: command not found

Oh! I just fixed a wrong detection on the installer which removed it for the installed system, you can install the tool with:

Well, technically speaking, let me explain:

A hard disk can contain bad blocks (sectors without being able to read them correctly), they are marked as "reallocated" and then ignored in the future, the problem is that they are NOT ignored when they are used, let's say, if your OS or your data is located to one of these blocks, this data will be lost (if OS file, the related application will fail, crash, etc, if is your data, you could have it unrecoverable for the specific file)

So, when you reinstall the system, all the files are copied again, theoretically these files are (since newly copied now) tried to copy and if is inside a wrong block, it should be copied to a new one, this means: everything should be fine and new system should work correctly

What the "filling with zeroes" is about, is basically to scan for all the disk errors and force it to mark them as wrong, this will save you from future failures with new data, but it may risk that your disk will turn unusable if too much errors are found or new ones are located to an important section (like main sectors of the disk)

In the end, maybe the filling with zeroes technique is probably just useless, hum… !

So, if I understood, there were probably some files of Elive 3.0.4 located in a bad sector that makes the system crashed continuously, and with my new, clean and virgin installation of 3.0.5 release these bad sectors has been avoided but if in the future there will appear new ones, and hazard makes that OS files are located on system would crash again. In the other way, I understand we can't estimate how many bad sectors we could find if we do a low level HD format.

In other words you've worked to develop 3.0.5 release almost for nothing, I'm so unhappy for, sorry.

This laptop has traveled a lot last 6 years, almost always by car and always halted (I think road vibrations doesn't damaged the HDD while it is halted), but it never fall from a table or things like those. I think is very risked (but ideal) to make a low level format, so in my opinion the best thing is to let it as it is actually, and survey SMART data sometimes to see if bad sectors grow, what do you think?

And the day I can buy a new one we can make a lot of test, including a low level format, only for the fun ;-)

That is :) this is how teorically works, and yes it should not give problems unless a new one appears (in a place which is used by a data), I have improved the installer for next versions (probably 3.7.x) to manage better the bad blocks issues with better informative messages and the option to fill with zeroes

Oh btw, I forgot to say that your information of the disk contains data about "g-shock", but I won't tell you what is this exactly about, I'm just finishing the amazing feature of hard disk reports in the installed system :) you will soon receive this update and after you report, these reports will appear when new ones are found, with all the needed information! That's very relative, I have seen disks to become totally broken after to run that and others ones to pass it without problems. In fact one of my main disks has 2 bad blocks found which I never noticed before (but now thanks to the new feature I will :)), and I will probably run the zeroing (but I need first to transfer all the data, so this will take time)

But yeah, you can leave it like that for now and having a control, the most important is that you have backups of your important data, but if you see new crashes (because of new badblocks found) you should then reinstall… in any case do not worry, the new feature will report you these suggestions in case is needed (not because new bad blocks but because unrecoverable ones!)

You can enable this feature by having the smartmontools installed and running "apug" in a terminal, then do a reboot of the computer

So you don't need to always be worried of watching the disks information lol

If I understood you, if my HD contains some info related to G-shock that would mean that it has had some impact while it was running. Maybe an impact on the table? or moving it from a room to another? It's strange, but not impossible. Also it would be possible that anybody hurts my laptop at work without inform me but I doesn't think.

Anyway I'm familiarizing with Unison slowly (it's also THE tool I always looking for because I'm a disaster to organize my data, Fslint+Unison would let me have all my data well organized and safely backup) so I'll keep my data in a safe HD by caution.

In the way of 3.7.x releases you're working, I think the better for me is to let in 3.0.x line releases to test stable releases, not development nor beta releases due to my faulty disk, anyway if changing my system to a development or beta release may help you I'm ready to change, if you say to me.

Also includes reports about bad blocks, for new ones that appears and for bad blocks that needs to be reallocated (most probably corrupted data), again, only in user-login time

For you to work is better to stick at the stable 3.0.x releases, because the desktops are not fully working on the next 3.7.x beta's, so even if they are more new and featured you need a stable environment to work (with outdated browsers and outdated packages, but..)

It's very strange, doesn't it? I must do Ctrl+Alt+Suppr to reboot my system.

This is more or less what happened in issue #731 but only when I manually do a Log out and then I try to log in again. In #731 issue that happened after system installation, at first start…..

Hum… This happened inmediately after to login ? If im not wrong there's a delay of less than 1 minute that the desktop needs to finish process a few things and so let you able to logout. In other words, if you wait some seconds (less than 1 minute) it doesn't logout?

The log out doesn't make any problem (if I try to logged me out I see a small window with processes that are closing) even in less than one minute. The problem appears when I try to log me in again from new session login screen. Is at those moment when problem appears.

I performed three test (2 of them trying to login as my default user and third trying to login as root), and all had done the same result; if I logged out, when I write my password and click enter screen goes black immediately (but system seems to be running because I listen start song), I'll wait until half an hour but screen remains black, and I must force to reboot with Crtl+Alt+Suppr (that makes that Elive doesn’t says after that I closed my system in a unsafe or bad way, when I must halt my system with poweer-off button Elive says me after that I shouldn't do that in next start).

This seems a graphic card driver issue?

I edit to add that when system logged me out continuously in the past (the start of this #730 issue some days ago) at the moment that I tried to log in again system do the log in correctly, not with a black screen. This black screen happens in the same way as in the closed issue #731, but the difference is that in #731 issue the problem appeared as the end of installation process and now the installation of 3.0.5 was OK (no black screen at the end of installation process)

In any case the problem has been reproduced the 3 times I tested (so 100% of the times)

BTW you can run "apug" to upgrade your system, I have yesterday uploaded 3.0.6 with some changes and updates, maybe your system needs a few updates :), see if you still having the problem after to update all (reboot)

Mmmh, it is possible, but try to disable the "special effects" (ecomorph emodule from enlightenment modules) to see if is the cause, and if not, also to disable the GL / accelerated mode of composite (switching to software mode), to see if these things solves the problem

Hello, I've done apug now, but I have Unison working actually so I'll reboot later (see below) and make some test.

I have disabled since first time all "special effects" because my PC doesn't seems to support them nor in live or in installed mode, so I have the more basic desktop that Elive provides. I haven't GL/accelerated mode neither. All acceleration options are not marked while installing. My CPU is an Intel Atom and I think graphic card it's inside, not a really dedicated graphic card :-(

To help you understand the "problem", my laptop do the first login automatically (it no ask me for user nor password as I saw it while installing), and if one time I'm working I logged me out to make a new login (as my user or as root) screen becomes black and I must force laptop to reboot.

In other way of things……. Today my old dog makes me fall my laptop crossing between my legs, so I think now you can see amazing data in G-shock if you analyze my HDD because the laptop was on, and working with 100% of swap file used while it falls, even the plastic case has go out and battery had got its attach clamps broken (now my battery got out if I lift my laptop). I rearmed all plastic covers again (laptop was completely open because it's plastic cover are clipped, no screws) and restart. System seems to work fine but I now have 140 reallocated sectors and Elive doesn't inform me at start. It's informs me that system was shut off in an incorrect way.
What I need to do to make a checkdisk in reiserfs? Do you thing that with this fall (1,20 meters high in a concrete floor) I finally should make a low level format to prevent future crashes?

I'll tell you the results of apug for log-out/log-in tomorrow morning when my system will reboot as Unison finished the copy of my data.

Ok, that is before to insert the username login, so while exiting from enlightenment

Try this:

sudo scite /usr/bin/e_wrapper

Edit the file and in the final lines you will see something like this:

if grep... wheezy... debian_version then...
    wait
fi

comment or delete all this piece of code, the 3 lines

Then reboot and see if the problem is solved

Basically: I have re-added this piece of code but it should not be needed at all, I will remove it by default if you confirm me that solves the issue AND doesn't give you problems (like automatically existing from the desktop, but I assume that this was related to the crash problem by the HD errors)

Mmmh, about the new badblocks thing, seems like it is not detecting correctly in your side (same for gshock, you should be notified about them), please show me the result of this file:

cat /etc/elive/disks-health

It should be pretty clear the contents :) and the disks_scanned part should include actually your disks, the data should be all correct compared to the smart data that you manually check from the application

About the formating, we will see that later, the important data is the "pending" ones

Second, I commented the 3 lines of e_wrapper, save it, reboot the machine and then loggout+login; nothing changes: black screen but I listen Elive song.

I tested logged me out+in in ACER which supports GL and special effects (whoh that it's pretty) and all works as they do. No problem for logged me out + in as much as times as I want.

The 3 lines had been removed by adding # and after reboot always happens the error.

BTW today the ACER makes me two times the issue of this topic too (end session while I'm working into), it's over 3.0.5 also, I'll do an apug and reboot, but it's the first time it does that, and its HDD it's completely OK, no sectors reallocated in that computer (the ACER)
