Elive

Eltrans was the easiest way to get big parts of the os translated for free. It needs to go live again, so what is the problem that prevents it from working? Is there any way we could write a new version of it so you do not need to waste your time? In that case, what are your requiremetns and what kind of interface should we give it so that it can just be put in place of the older one?

system: elive 1.8.8 (downloaded from elivecd.org) installed on inspiron 1520

the default language is us and it is OK... the problem is when i change the keyboard layout to estonian in elpanel, the output of the keys is totally mangled. it looks something like a mix between webdings and chinese

since the layout is NOT giving latin letters, the user is unable to log in. this is a big problem for those new users trying out linux/elive... they have no idea how to fix xorg.conf themselves.

logging in from command line i was able to see that the xorg.conf had “et” as a layout instead of “ee”

after changing the layout to “ee” manually, everything works again

It’d be great a non graphical installtion like debian’s one, so that older hardware with low memory (under 512mb) will be able to install the os without needing to swap and, possibly, taking less than a hour.

my “Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC” onboard ethernet adapter works fine with any other distro. Even in Debian. But none of the Elive it does not work. in Debian 4.0 R3 it worked. if Elive is Debian based it should work on Elive too. Right?

Can’t installing Elive on VMWare. The Eliveinstaller reports this:

Error Information:
	An exit code of 1 was returned from sudo eliveinstaller.

Output Data:
	There was no output

Error Logs:
	There was no error message

It happens after I make the partitions, then I choose where goes Swap and where goes Root, and so Eliveinstaller crashes saving this in the log!

Thanks for the attention on this, I’m a truly fan of this distro.

ETK Preferences does not change to show different windows for each of the tabs.

EG: When I click on Theme it should show different themes to choose from, and when I click on User Preferences I should see the appropriate window information. Default tab “theme” shows all the time.

Elive 1.9.22 unstable.

Package “linux-image-2.6.18-elive” does not contain the module bcm43xx for broadcom 43xx wifi cards.
The directory exists in the module path, but it is empty.

PrinceAMD, i have seen this also happen in my laptop, some module file does not exist!

Could be nice if we have an e17 module to limit the windows to be in the screen limits, instead to pass over it. This is a useful feature for non-experienced users.

Note: this report has somewhere (i dont remember where) a list of features needed, like which options to have on it (like: limit the windows to be in-screen, limit the windows to be not entirely out of the screen, allow the window to be partially out, etc etc), is needed to check this list first (in hackers or in dev ? i dont remember right now)

If we are already connected to internet is useless to scan about networks, disable the scan until we are disconnected (the non-stop scanning thing makes that some wireless drivers blocks and a reboot is required to recover the connection)

I’d liked to test elive’s minimum requirements putting together some of the oldest piecies of hardware i have lying aroud.
I begun trying it out with a old motherboard, a sf2/661fx rev 1.1, which features sis integrated graphics/sis 964l (which is pretty common in old pentium 4 based office desktop computers), mounting a ‘01 2.44 GHz pentium 4 (https://ark.intel.com/products/27438/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-2_40-GHz-512K-Cache-533-MHz-FSB), 512 mb 266mhz ddr ram and a classical ide hdd.
It looked like a possible common set up for older computers, and i was surprised finding out that there was no way to boot in graphical mode! None of the options given, either in pae or older kernel, not even the special graphics failing mode!
Then i added a vanta 16 (which i noticed in here was a often times used cheap af graphics card in older pentium 4s, as it was the msi nvidia tnt2 riva m64/m64 pro, which gave me the same results as the vanta being based on the same hw/drivers). Despite if i’m not mistaken it was supposed to support 76xx drivers (which should be avaialble in the repos), i needed to switch to the free drivers. It let me choose keyboard language and system language correctly., then when getting to the desktop it gave me a black screen :/ the mouse was visible though, so i think there must be a workaround (i will try to find it as soon as i have time)
then moved to geforce 2 mx200/mx400. Supposed to work fine with either legacy drivers 76xx or 96xx, both gave me several graphical errors. nosense screen resolution (like 600×480) and i was unable to use either the dock or the applications menu. Terminal took forever to open and everything was mostly unusable. Tried again with all the boot options, looks like working fine only using the free drivers options (both with the newer and older kernel). No graphics acceleration available, even if in windows 98 graphics acceleration was available.
Using the software acceleration caused a heavy load on the poor p4, which meant random freezes whenever it had to open an heavy application/installing something with apt-get (and the bottleneck wasn’t the ram or some sort of swapping, never hit 300 mbs of used ram!). Tried switching to e16, nothing changed.
The machine worked perfectly (and same for all the graphics options listed here)under windows 98/xp and debian stretch with i3-wm. Only issue was the sis chipset unable to elaborated 3d graphics for a lack of compatible drivers in linux, but i’ve been running q4os (debian jessie, later stretch, + TDE at the time) without having too much troubles. DE worked perfectly, at least

Hola! Tengo tres problemas:

1- Al cerrar sesión el sistema se bloquea.

2- Cuando pongo el equipo en suspensión o le doy a hibernar, me ocurre que al volver al escritorio Internet no funciona y si reinicio todo vuelve a la normalidad, esto ya me pasaba con el sistema estable.

3- Cuando intento actualizar no me deja y todo es darle al botón pero ahí se queda sin poder actualizar.

Chosing keyboard layout diferent from english switches direktly to it. And loging becomes inposible. I think there should be some hot key for swutching between english and other kayboard layout.

This is a Bug!!!! try to fix this issue in the Clock, whatever i do to set the time of the Clock in Elive, it get after a new start again wrong.

Please try hardly not to remove E16 from the next version of Elive, it is really simple, lite and very attractive to the Newbies. I like to much and really happy to have it so well configured under Elive. Its little buggy than E17.

I’ve installed Elive on an old Compaq P3 @700 Mhz, with more than 128Mb of memory.
The problem is that running as another user than root doesn’t allow the access to the elpanel.

The problem happened as soon as installed was completed, when I logged in with the user created during installation.
The ‘fine tune’ step seems to start, however I’m not able to confirm it does anything, neither if it ends after a while.

When trying to access an option in the elpanel, I get the prompt for the root account password.
If I enter a wrong password, the windows pops up again requesting the password.
If I enter the right password, the windows closes, but nothing happens.

I tried to login as root, and I have full access to the panel (even if I loose all my icons and bars).
I’ve tried to delete and create new users, but it still doesn’t work.

I’m quite a noob in Linux, but I don’t think I made a mistake (in fact I followed the installation step by step).
My drive is a 10Gb, split in one main partition of 7.5Gb for the system, and a 2.5Gb Linux-swap.
I’ve used the reiserfs format as suggested.

Please if I missed anything just tell me ^^

Elive doesn’t start on my PC.
The image shows my computer screen booting from the Live CD.
I think this is a bigger error, because Ubuntu showed me a similiar error code.
Everytime I start the PC it shows me that screen, then I have to reboot and the second time it boots normally.

I just have installed the last development release of elive on my dell inspiron 1300 laptop.

Everything went ok except that after the “fine tuning” of the installed system the network connection is not activated by the default by the system when doing a normal boot. For the moment i am using elive panel to access the network connector to connect the card to the internet (via DHCP) or ifconfig in the terminal.

I saw that the netconnector has a “auto-connect” feature which is ticked yet it seems it doesn’t work.

My ethernet card is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-Tx card.
